South Korea interested in AKINCI, the Turkish high-performance UAS

Baykar, the Turkish drone company that achieved worldwide renown with the success of its Bayraktar TB2, received a visit from South Korean military authorities, probably to learn about the Bayraktar AKINCI high-performance UAS.

The Baykar company posted on its social media that it received a visit from the Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces of the Republic of Korea, Lieutenant General Oon Tai Yeo and his delegation. They visited the Özdemir Bayraktar National Technology Center and meetings were held with Baykar senior management. Judging from the pictures, the Korean delegation received a detailed briefing of the AKINCI.

The Akinci is a high-performance unmanned aerial system (UAS) designed to perform reconnaissance, ground attack, naval strike and even destroy other aerial targets.

As reported by the manufacturer, the Bayraktar AKINCI is equipped with dual artificial intelligence avionics that support signal processing, sensor fusion and real-time situational awareness.

AKINCI is capable of solo operations, or teamed with manned combat aircraft. It carries electronic support systems, dual satellite communication systems, air-to-air radar, anti-collision radar and synthetic aperture radar.

Unlike other unmanned aerial systems in the same category, the AKINCI can autonomously takeoff and land, as well as taxiing and parking, by fusing data from its onboard sensors.

With a maximum take-off weight of 6,000 kg, of which 1,500kg are for external loads, this UAS can fly for up to 24hs, with a maximum ceiling of between 30,000 and 40,000 ft. It can carry the following air-to-surface and air-to-air armament:

•    Mini Smart Munition MAM-L
•    Mini Smart Munition MAM – C
•    Cirit Missile
•    L-UMTAS Missile
•    Mini Smart Munition Bozok
•    MK-81, MK-82, MK-83 Guided Bombs (JDAM)\
•    Wing Assisted Guided Bomb MK-82
•    Air-to-Air Missile Gokdogan and Bozdogan
•    Stand-Off Missile SOM-A

The AESA radar, developed by Aselsan, will soon be integrated into the Bayraktar AKINCI, enabling it to perform air-to-air missions with infrared-guided and active radar-guided missiles, the same ones being developed to equip Turkish Air Force (Türk Hava Kuvvetleri) fighter aircraft.
