Wizz Air to Close its Vienna Base
The ultra-low-cost carrier will remove its five based aircraft and cancel all routes originating from the Austrian capital, a strategic move that will directly affect 254 local employees.
Wizz Air has confirmed the closure of its operating base at Vienna International Airport (VIE). The withdrawal will be carried out progressively, starting in October 2025 and concluding in March 2026. This decision involves the removal of five aircraft from the Austrian capital and the cancellation of all its routes from the city.
The closure process will begin on October 26, 2025, with the withdrawal of two aircraft and the suspension of routes to Bilbao (BIO) and London Gatwick (LGW). The second and final phase will be completed on March 15, 2026, when the remaining three aircraft are withdrawn and all other Vienna-based operations cease.
The move will affect a total of 254 Vienna-based employees, including flight crews, cabin staff, and administrative personnel. In response to an inquiry from Aviacionline, Wizz Air stated its commitment to supporting all affected employees by offering relocation opportunities to other bases in its network and, where possible, alternative roles within the organization.
Passengers with bookings on affected flights will be contacted directly by the airline via the WIZZ app or email. They will be offered several options, including a full refund in WIZZ credits, a cash refund to the original payment method, or the opportunity to rebook on another company flight at no additional cost.
Despite the base closure, the ultra-low-cost carrier will maintain its presence in the Central European region. Wizz Air emphasized that it will continue to operate an extensive network of routes from its nearby bases in Bratislava (BTS), Slovakia, and Budapest (BUD), Hungary, where it continues to expand its offerings and market leadership.
The airline opened its Vienna base in 2018, entering a highly competitive market dominated by the Lufthansa Group, through Austrian Airlines, and Ryanair, which operates under its own brand and that of its subsidiary Lauda Europe.
In its communication, the company thanked its Vienna colleagues for their dedication and professionalism over the years, as well as its passengers for their patience and understanding during this transition process.
