Venezuela Suspends All Flights from Colombia Amid Security Concerns Before Elections
The Venezuelan government has announced the immediate suspension of all flights arriving from Colombia, citing the alleged entry of individuals linked to activities aimed at disrupting public order ahead of the country’s regional and parliamentary elections scheduled for May 25.
According to EFE and La FM, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello made the announcement on state broadcaster Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), stating that the decision follows reports of suspicious movements originating from Colombian territory.
“We have issued instructions to immediately suspend all flights from Colombia to Venezuela, because the information we have is related to the movement of individuals involved in these activities,” Cabello declared.
He added that 38 people have been detained so far, including 17 foreign nationals, who are allegedly linked to violent groups, terrorist activities, and conspiratorial actions. According to Cabello, these individuals entered Venezuela either via land border crossings or on flights from Colombia.
This latest move follows a similar decision earlier this year. In January, Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported receiving official notice from Venezuela regarding a 72-hour closure of the land border and airspace, citing “internal reasons” around the time of Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration as president.
