Venezuela Extends Ban on Commercial Flights until November

The Venezuelan government announced that it will extend the ban on commercial flights throughout its territory until November 12 due to the epidemiological situation.

«Emergency operations, cargo and mail flights, technical landings, humanitarian flights, repatriation flights or other flights authorized by the United Nations are exempt,» said the the National Institute of Civil Aeronautics (INAC) in a statement.

The organism points out that passengers who enter the country must comply with quarantine, which will be supervised by the government and must also comply with the requested medical evaluations.

The quarantine in Venezuela began on March 16, established by president Nicolás Maduro.

According to official figures, Venezuela has 83,137 infections and 697 deaths from COVID-19 in a population of 30 million inhabitants.

The pandemic arrived in Venezuela at a time when the aviation activity was going through a severe economic crisis, as a result of the recession and inflation, with state debts that exceed 3,800 million dollars according to information provided by IATA (IATA).

Before the start of the pandemic some of the foreign airlines that flew to Venezuela were Air France, Iberia, Turkish Airlines, Air Europa, Wingo and Copa Airlines.

The question is how domestic airlines will continue to fight during an economic crisis that was already installed and that with the arrival of the pandemic intensified even more, as well as what will be the position of foreign airlines with Venezuela for their return and if the government will soon allow the opening of international borders for the reactivation of the local economy in a country that has been hit hard economically.
