Tsunami Alert Prompts Airport Evacuations in Southern Chile
Chile aviation authority (DGAC) reported that as of 1:00 PM local time (17:00 GMT) this Wednesday (30th), two airports located in the southern coastal areas of the country have been evacuated due to the tsunami warning issued by the National Secretariat for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED).
This is a consequence of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that had its epicenter in Russia, east of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
One of the airports whose evacuation was mandatory is Nuevo Chaltén (WHC/SCTN), which is 5 kilometers southeast of the center of Chaitén, in the Los Lagos Region, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.
The NOTAM indicates the validity of the airport closure until at least 7:30 PM local time (23:30 GMT).

The other is Quellón Airport (SCON), located on the island of Chiloé, also in the Los Lagos Region, which is surrounded by the ocean.
The NOTAM for Quellón also indicates validity until 7:30 PM local time.

Apart from disruptions to general aviation, the closure of these airports will not affect scheduled flights as they do not currently have services from airlines.
