The expansion and key modernization of Cartagena airport begins
Rafael Núñez International Airport, the main air terminal of the Colombian Caribbean, begins a modernization and expansion phase with the formal start of its construction phase, which is scheduled to be completed within 30 months.
The project will generate between 300 and 400 direct jobs and is part of a strategic plan aimed at improving the airport's infrastructure and operational capacity. The work includes the construction of a new international terminal building, which will increase in size from 25,000 m² to more than 44,000 m², as well as the expansion of the parking area, which will grow from 180 to 330 spaces.
Among the planned interventions is the implementation of five jet bridges, waiting areas, and the ‘Swing Gate’ technology, designed to optimize the use of shared spaces between domestic and international flights. A transportation system will also be developed for passengers located in remote positions, and the current terminal will be renovated.
The act to begin this phase was signed on March 3, marking the start of the first ground preparation activities and space relocation. The OINAC concession, responsible for the project, highlighted that this stage responds to the growing needs of the tourism sector and the economic environment of Cartagena, particularly in the communities that depend on the travel industry.
“The terminal expansion will increase its capacity and is designed with a long-term vision for the Caribbean region,” said Carlos Cuartas, manager of the concession. The estimated investment is 1.4 trillion pesos, and the process is being carried out under the supervision of the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI), with the required technical studies and permits already completed.
In addition, socialization sessions have been held with local communities and entities within the project’s area of influence, in which the project scope and proposed mitigation measures were explained.
The planned modernization aims to provide Cartagena with a more efficient, sustainable airport terminal aligned with international standards, consolidating its position as a tourist and commercial destination.
