Panair do Brasil began operations on October the 22nd, 1929 as NRYBA do Brasil, a subsidiary of NYRBA (New York, Rio and Buenos Aires Line). The airline was born in response to new competitors in the region, such as Syndicato Condor (Cruzeiro do Sul) and Varig.

The development of Panair do Brasil was strongly boosted at the beginning of World War II, since Syndicato Condor and Varig were controlled by German capital, which reduced its growth. This caused Panair to increase its connections in Brazil, thus providing airports with infrastructure and services provided by the airline. Furthermore, in 1943, Panair do Brasil was authorized to operate to all South American countries, a possibility that no other company in the region had at that time.

Shortly after the end of World War II, Panair saw the opportunity to grow internationally. In March 1946, it took delivery of its first Lockheed 049 Constellation, becoming the first company to acquire it outside the United States. A month later, it inaugurated flights to Dakar, Lisbon, Paris and London. In 1947 operations were extended to Istanbul, Cairo and the following year Zurich, Frankfurt, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile were added.

From the mid to late 1940s until the closure of its services, Panair do Brasil was considered the most important company in all of Latin America.

Panair do Brasil was forced to abruptly cease flights on February 10th, 1965, when the Brazilian military government suspended its operating certificate and handed over the concession of its international routes to Varig and domestic routes to Cruzeiro do Sul.

No passengers suffered delays or cancellations, since all were taken over by Varig and Cruzeiro when Panair’s operating certificate was rescinded.
