SWISS Details Debut of its Airbus A350: Boston to be First Long-Haul Destination
SWISS is preparing to receive its first Airbus A350, named "Wanderlust," and announces its inaugural route to Boston, marking a key step in its fleet modernization.
SWISS International Air Lines (SWISS) has outlined the first operational steps for its newest aircraft, the Airbus A350-900, by announcing that Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) will be its first long-haul destination. Flights connecting Zurich (ZRH) with the U.S. city will commence on January 1, 2026, with a frequency of four weekly services.
The airline is scheduled to receive its first A350-900 in the last quarter of 2025. This initial aircraft, which will be named "Wanderlust," will initially operate on intra-European routes. This period will allow for the familiarization of flight and cabin crews with the new aircraft's systems and procedures before its deployment on the intercontinental network.
When and where will the first SWISS Airbus A350 fly?
The first SWISS A350, named "Wanderlust," will begin its long-haul services on January 1, 2026, on the Zurich-Boston route. Prior to this, it will perform short-haul flights within Europe for crew training and familiarization.
The arrival of the A350-900 is a centerpiece of SWISS's long-haul fleet modernization strategy. These aircraft are intended to progressively replace the four-engine Airbus A340-300s. The transition to an all-twin-engine wide-body fleet, which already includes the Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A330-300, will enable the company to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 25% compared to its predecessor, aligning with the industry's sustainability goals.
The SWISS A350s will feature a 242-seat configuration across four classes, designed to elevate the travel experience. The cabin, branded as SWISS SENSE, is configured with three seats in First Class, 45 in Business Class, 38 in Premium Economy, and 156 in Economy Class. This new interior aims to strengthen the airline's position in the premium segment.
The original order from SWISS, announced in 2022, includes a total of ten Airbus A350-900s. The first five aircraft will be integrated into the fleet between 2025 and 2027, while a second batch of five units is scheduled for delivery between late 2027 and 2031. With this addition, SWISS becomes the fourth airline in the Lufthansa Group to operate the A350, joining Lufthansa, Edelweiss, and ITA Airways, which promotes synergy and standardization within the airline group.
