Spirit Airlines Challenges the Highway, Opens Route Between Fort Lauderdale and Key West
Spirit Airlines launches the only direct route between Fort Lauderdale and Key West, strengthening its Florida network and offering a swift alternative to road travel.
In a move that strengthens its Florida network, Spirit Airlines has announced the launch of a new nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Key West International Airport (EYW). The operation will commence on November 6 and will provide the only direct air link between these two key South Florida locations.
The ultra-low-cost carrier will initially operate the route with four weekly frequencies, departing on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. In response to expected high-season demand, the service will increase to a daily frequency starting December 18. This link not only connects two premier tourist destinations but also offers travelers a considerably faster alternative to the nearly four-hour drive via U.S. Route 1.
John Kirby, Spirit's Vice President of Network Planning, stated, "Key West is a unique beach destination, and now travelers can easily access this island paradise." He emphasized that the new service "offers a convenient and affordable alternative to driving and gives our Guests in the Florida Keys a new way to get around South Florida in style."

When do flights start? The service begins on November 6 with four weekly flights and becomes daily on December 18.

This expansion comes at a time of consolidation for Spirit, which completed a financial restructuring process in March 2025. The new route enhances Spirit's robust presence in Florida, offering services to destinations such as Fort Myers, Orlando, Pensacola, Tampa, and West Palm Beach, with FLL serving as its primary connecting hub.
For its part, Key West International Airport welcomes Spirit at a time of significant modernization, following the recent inauguration of its new $118 million Concourse A, which enhances the passenger experience with eight new air-conditioned jet bridges.
Richard Strickland, Executive Director of Airports in Key West, celebrated the news. "Spirit Airlines' arrival in the Key West market this November is great news for our passengers, both local and visitors," he affirmed. Strickland added that they look forward "to the access to Spirit's extensive network of destinations," which will compete for travelers alongside other airlines like Allegiant, Breeze Airways, American, Delta, and United, already operating at the Florida Keys airport.
