SATENA Deploys Second Twin Otter Aircraft to Strengthen Regional Connectivity
SATENA has launched commercial operations of its second DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet expansion and efforts to enhance air connectivity in remote regions of Colombia. The aircraft, registered as HK5453 FAC 1401, entered service on April 6 and will focus on strategic routes in the northern Pacific and northeastern regions of the country.
With both Twin Otter aircraft now operating simultaneously, the airline will be able to boost capacity and improve service reliability on priority routes such as Medellín–Ocaña–Cúcuta. Starting in late May, SATENA will also launch a new connection: Medellín–Juradó.
According to Óscar Zuluaga Castaño, president of SATENA, the addition of this aircraft represents a significant step toward fulfilling the airline’s mission to ensure air access to hard-to-reach areas. The DHC-6 Twin Otter is specifically designed for short and unpaved runways, making it ideal for regions with limited airport infrastructure.
This delivery marks the completion of the first phase of SATENA’s fleet renewal plan, which aims to have six aircraft in operation by the end of 2025, and a total of eight by 2026. The strategy includes expanding coverage, increasing flight frequencies, and consolidating the airline’s presence in areas that currently lack regular air service.
SATENA projects it will transport more than 1.5 million passengers in 2025. This operational growth is part of a broader effort to improve access to essential services in historically underserved areas and contribute to territorial integration across Colombia.
