Samba do Janeiro!: IATA’s 82nd Annual General Meeting to Be Held in Rio de Janeiro in 2026
From June 6 to 8, 2026, the global leaders of the airline industry will gather once again in a South American city, as the 82nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is set to take place in Rio de Janeiro.
The decision was announced yestarday during the 81st AGM currently underway in New Delhi, India.
LATAM Airlines will host the 2026 edition, marking a milestone in its recovery and resurgence following the pandemic-induced crisis.
Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, emphasized that the event will serve as a moment to "reflect on the changes over more than two decades of development," a period during which air connectivity has supported major global events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Walsh noted that holding the AGM in South America’s largest air travel market underscores the sector’s potential to drive social and economic prosperity in the region.
LATAM Airlines CEO Roberto Alvo stated, “LATAM is proud to host the IATA AGM in Brazil in 2026,” highlighting the importance of the country as the group’s "main market." He added, “We are confident that Rio de Janeiro—one of the world’s most spectacular cities, with its unmatched hospitality and beauty—will offer a warm welcome and a memorable experience for all attendees.”
LATAM currently connects 153 destinations across 27 countries and transported 82 million passengers in 2024. The airline also achieved significant milestones in fleet modernization and environmental sustainability.
Hosting the AGM in Brazil also honors the nation’s rich aviation history, linked to figures like Alberto Santos-Dumont, recognized as a pioneer of powered flight. His 1906 flight is celebrated as a landmark moment in the development of aviation.
