Rolex, gold and millions: what was hidden by the gang that was stealing at Medellín's José María Córdova Airport
Major traffic and security operation near José María Córdova International Airport results in 74 citations and five vehicle impoundments, including three for operating illegal transportation services. The operation, carried out over the past weekend, was led by the Rionegro Mayor’s Office with support from the National Police, Military Gaula unit, and the Army, according to El Colombiano.
The enforcement action, which lasted more than four hours, aimed to strengthen airport security and encourage the exclusive use of authorized public transport, ensuring safety for the thousands of tourists and travelers passing through this major Colombian air terminal each day.
According to local authorities, the operation was part of a broader strategy to combat illegal transportation and restore public confidence in the formal mobility system of Eastern Antioquia.
Suspects in airport passenger thefts arrested
In a related development, El Colombiano also reported that three men were arrested in late April, accused of being part of a criminal group targeting travelers at the airport. Investigators believe the suspects are linked to at least 42 thefts in the area.
The investigation was launched following numerous complaints from victims. A team of detectives analyzed security footage, phone records, and conducted photo lineups, through which 18 victims identified the suspects.
The raid was carried out in the Villa Hermosa and Buenos Aires neighborhoods, where authorities seized three motorcycles, mobile phones, two gold chains, two gold bracelets, five high-end watches—including two Rolexes—two motorcycle helmets, and 4 million pesos in cash.
These actions are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and enforce legal transportation standards in the region, offering a more secure experience for travelers using José María Córdova International Airport.
