Oneworld CEO Rob Gurney to Step Down, Search for Replacement Begins

Global airline alliance oneworld announced today that CEO Rob Gurney has decided to leave the central management team. oneworld Chairman and Qatar Airways Group CEO, His Excellency Akbar Al Baker, expressed gratitude for Gurney’s leadership, stating, «Rob has played a critical role in establishing oneworld as the most preferred alliance by global travellers with a best-in-class travel experience.»
Gurney, who joined oneworld in 2016, expanded the alliance by adding Royal Air Maroc, Alaska Airlines, and future member Oman Air. He also promoted oneworld’s sustainability efforts, with member airlines committing to a 10% sustainable aviation fuel target by 2030. During Gurney’s tenure, the alliance launched oneworld connect, providing more travelers the benefits of being part of oneworld.
Gurney will continue in his role until 1 July 2023. American Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Vasu Raja will lead the search for his replacement, with Gurney and the oneworld management team reporting to Raja until a successor is named.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom emphasized the importance of oneworld, saying, «With travellers around the world eagerly returning to the skies, the oneworld Alliance plays a critical role in providing global connectivity.»
Recently, oneworld relocated its global headquarters to Fort Worth in an effort to strengthen partnerships with member airlines. In 2022, the alliance was named Best Airline Alliance by both Business Traveler USA and Global Traveler.
