    With the start of the 2022 boreal summer season and looser sanitary restrictions, Portugal is once again receiving multiple transatlantic flights from the United States, Canada and Brazil, bringing the airline industry back to pre-pandemic levels.

    American Airlines

    Since March 28, the Dallas-based airline restores its service between Philadelphia (PHL) and Lisbon (LIS) with daily flights operated in Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, the company’s last operation in Portugal was at the end of 2019 and for the first time will introduce the Premium Economy product in this destination, prior to covid this route mobilized 75,803 passengers.

    United Airlines

    This summer, the Chicago-based airline will be the leading foreign long-haul carrier in Portugal. Starting March 27, the company will increase capacity on its Newark (EWR) – Lisbon (LIS) route with the introduction of the 318-passenger Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner in four classes (44 Polaris/21 Premium Plus/54 Economy Plus/199 Economy). Prior to covid, this service carried 305,425 passengers between United and its partner TAP Air Portugal.

    The carrier has also resumed several seasonal services between Newark (EWR) and Porto (OPO) from March 28 and Washington Dulles (IAD) – Lisbon (LIS) from March 27, both routes operating daily Boeing 757-200 flights.

    Air Canada

    As part of the Canadian airline’s transatlantic revival, it has resumed services to Lisbon (LIS) from Montreal (YUL) and Toronto (YYZ) operated on 297-seat Airbus A330-300s in three classes.

    According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, during the peak summer season Air Canada will offer 7,128 seats per week, making it the second largest airline in the market between Canada and Portugal.

    More destinations in South America

    TAP Air Portugal has reestablished its service between Lisbon (LIS) and Porto Alegre (POA) from March 28 with three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays operated by Airbus A330-200 with 269 seats in two classes, with the resumption of this route the Portuguese airline will offer 10 destinations in Brazil.
