Que iso, meu cara?: GOL Linhas Aéreas Ends Sponsorship of Brazil’s National Football Team Amid CBF Controversies
GOL Linhas Aéreas is no longer listed as an official sponsor of the Brazilian National Football Team, a move that aligns with a period of administrative turmoil within the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
The airline ended its sponsorship agreement with the CBF in late 2024, joining other companies such as Mastercard, Pague Menos pharmacies, and TCL Semp, all of which have either opted not to renew their contracts or terminated them early.
The termination of the deal—originally set to run through 2026—was first reported by the newspaper Estadão. According to the outlet, the decision is believed to be linked to recent controversies surrounding the leadership of CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues. Allegations include excessive spending, inaction on structural issues in Brazilian football, and even claims that sex workers were hired to entertain guests of the federation. Rodrigues also faces accusations of using legal action to silence critical journalists.
These administrative issues, combined with the underwhelming performance of Brazil’s men’s national team in recent competitions and the lack of a head coach during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, are believed to have contributed to the loss of several sponsors.
As part of the now-defunct partnership, GOL had provided aircraft for the team’s transportation—though this was not always consistently applied—and painted some of its Boeing 737s in special liveries celebrating the national team.
The last such aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 with registration PR-GUK, began to undergo visual changes in December 2024. Initially, the CBF logos were obscured and the Canarinho mascot was partially removed from the tail. By March 2025, the commemorative livery had been completely replaced with GOL’s standard colors.
Historically, other airlines such as Varig and TAM (now LATAM Airlines Brasil) have also served as sponsors of the CBF. Among the brands that continue to support the federation are Nike, Itaú Bank, Guaraná Antarctica (via Ambev), telecom operator Vivo, and pharmaceutical company Cimed.
