Peru Sets June 1 as Opening Date for New Terminal at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport
Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Wednesday afternoon (April 30) a new scheduled opening date for the new terminal at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport.
According to a brief statement shared on its social media platforms, the MTC set June 1 as the day the new facility will begin operations.
“From this date, all international and domestic flights will operate from the new passenger terminal, positioning Peru as a modern and efficient air hub,” the ministry stated.
Transport Minister Raúl Pérez Reyes added that the current terminal will operate until midnight on May 31, after which there will be a 12-hour closure before operations commence at the new terminal around noon on June 1.
Lima Airport Partners (LAP), the airport’s concessionaire, also confirmed the news, noting that a “soft launch” phase of the new facilities will begin on May 15.
The announcement came just hours after Verónica Zambrano, president of Ositran (the Supervisory Body for Investment in Transport Infrastructure for Public Use), stated in a local interview that “there are no critical issues preventing operations from starting.” She also mentioned that Ositran is considering sanctions against LAP for delays and has opened an investigation, with results expected in about five months.
The opening of the so-called “new Jorge Chávez Airport”—though technically only the terminal is new—has been the subject of controversy for over a year.
Originally slated for December 2024, the launch was postponed after airlines raised concerns about the risks of opening during the high-traffic holiday season. The date was then pushed to January 29, then March 30, 2025. Despite preparations appearing complete, the MTC forced another delay, citing incomplete operational testing.
LAP publicly objected, stating that as of March 14, the project was 99.5% complete, but the government ultimately imposed another postponement.
Now all eyes are on June 1 to see whether the opening will finally happen.
In 2024, Jorge Chávez Airport handled 24.5 million passengers (+15.2%), making it the sixth-busiest airport in Latin America and the Caribbean. The $1.3 billion expansion project, launched in 2019, includes a new control tower and second runway (both operational since 2023), and terminal construction began in 2022. The upgrade will increase the airport’s capacity to 40 million passengers per year.
The project is part of a broader “Airport City” initiative, which includes a new fuel plant, hotels, cargo transfer center, customs warehouses, and logistics and free trade zones.
