Pegasus Airlines, the Turkish low-cost carrier, has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for authorization to commence operations in the country via a codeshare agreement with Iberia.

This move would allow Pegasus to market flights between Turkey and the United States, using Iberia's hub in Madrid (MAD) as a connection point.

According to a joint application filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the agreement proposes that Pegasus Airlines will place its "PC" designator code on flights operated by Iberia. Initially, the included routes are between Madrid (MAD) and two of Iberia's key U.S. destinations: New York (JFK) and Miami (MIA).

This arrangement will enable Pegasus passengers to purchase a single ticket for travel from Turkey, connect in Madrid, and continue to the United States on an Iberia aircraft, but under a Pegasus flight number. The Turkish airline will not operate its own aircraft to the U.S. at this stage.

The agreement is also reciprocal. Iberia will be able to place its "IB" code on flights operated by Pegasus Airlines between Madrid and various destinations in Turkey. This allows the Spanish carrier to offer its own customers a seamless, single-ticket codeshare service from the U.S. to Turkey via its Madrid hub.

The applicants state that this partnership is consistent with the U.S.-EU Open Skies Agreement and the U.S.-Turkey Air Transport Agreement, both of which permit codesharing with third-country carriers.

In the filing, the airlines noted that the service "will benefit the travelling public by providing enhanced connectivity and additional travel options for passengers travelling in the U.S. - Türkiye market via Iberia's Madrid hub". They have requested expedited processing to begin marketing and selling these services as soon as all necessary government approvals are secured.
