The ultra low-cost airline (ULCC) JetSMART announced the start of sales for its new direct international route between Asunción (ASU) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG). With this launch, the company strengthens its connectivity network in Paraguay by adding its second international destination from the nation's capital.

Operations will begin on January 9, 2026, positioning JetSMART as the only airline to offer this connection regularly throughout the year. The flights will be operated with new Airbus aircraft, part of the youngest fleet in South America. The route will have a frequency of three weekly flights, scheduled for Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays. The flight duration between Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU) and Galeão International Airport (GIG) will be 2 hours and 25 minutes.

For its first year of operations, JetSMART projects it will transport more than 46,000 passengers, boosting tourism and trade between Paraguay and Brazil. According to data from Paraguay's National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DINAC), air traffic between the two countries accounted for just over 20% of the monthly total during 2024 and the first half of 2025.

According to a company statement, tickets are now available on its website with a promotional launch fare valid until August 25. The final one-way price starts at $91 (a $49 fare plus $42 in taxes and fees). Additionally, passengers can redeem miles from American Airlines' AAdvantage® program, starting from 7,500 miles plus taxes.

"With this new direct route to Rio de Janeiro, we offer more opportunities for Paraguayans to enjoy one of Brazil's most attractive destinations, while we continue to promote tourism and commercial exchange," said Verónica Marambio Álvarez, Commercial Manager of International Markets and Regional Development at JetSMART.

Marcelo Freixo, President of Embratur, celebrated the news: "By providing better access to the 'Marvelous City' with direct and regular flights from Asunción, Paraguayans can enjoy nature, Carioca cuisine, and the full calendar of events that Rio offers for short getaways. I have no doubt it will be a success".

Since it arrived in Paraguay in 2022, JetSMART has transported over 120,000 passengers to and from Asunción. The airline, recognized by SKYTRAX as the Best Low-Cost in South America, currently operates more than 80 routes in nine countries with a fleet of 49 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.
