El Dorado International Airport Launches Campaign to Protect the Andean Condor
The Jaime Duque Park Foundation (FPJD) and El Dorado International Airport’s operator, OPAIN, have formalized a partnership to strengthen efforts to protect the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), a species classified as at risk and a national symbol of Colombia. The agreement includes initiatives aimed at raising environmental awareness among travelers, airport staff, and the general public.
One of the most notable outcomes of this collaboration is the birth of ‘Rafiki,’ a condor hatched through artificial incubation in July 2024 following a scientific research process. OPAIN will act as the bird’s sponsor, taking an active role in its protection and in raising its profile as a symbol of conservation efforts.

The joint action plan will focus on three key areas:
- Information and outreach: Launch of educational campaigns highlighting the condor’s status, the threats it faces—such as illegal hunting and agrochemical use—and its ecological importance in the Andean ecosystem. Content will be shared through the airport’s communication channels.
- Awareness activities: Events targeting visitors, passengers, and airport staff to promote biodiversity protection.
- Environmental volunteering: Involvement of OPAIN employees in activities within nature reserves managed by the FPJD to support the conservation program.
In addition, the agreement includes the monitoring and care of 1,000 trees previously planted by OPAIN on land managed by the foundation as part of a long-term environmental strategy.
According to Natalí Leal, OPAIN’s General Manager, the initiative reflects a shared vision for sustainability and highlights the private sector’s role in natural resource conservation. Similarly, Rafael Torres, Director of FPJD, emphasized the importance of forming partnerships that go beyond institutional boundaries and encourage public participation in biodiversity protection.
“The collaboration between a conservation-focused organization like the Jaime Duque Park Foundation and OPAIN sets a powerful precedent for shared social responsibility in preserving Colombia’s natural heritage,” said Leal. “It also supports our broader efforts to operate sustainably—making efficient use of natural resources, reducing CO2 emissions, and contributing to environmental recovery.”

The campaign, titled “Flying Together for Conservation,” will officially launch on June 17, 2025, and will be visible throughout El Dorado Airport, engaging the more than 45 million passengers who pass through annually.
