Ecuador will require yellow fever vaccination certificate from travelers from neighboring countries
Several airlines operating in Ecuador, including LATAM and Avianca, are notifying passengers of a new health regulation issued by Ecuador's Ministry of Health. Starting Monday, May 12, 2025, Ecuadorian authorities will require the International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever from travelers arriving from Brazil, Peru, Colombia, or Bolivia.
The measure applies to passengers of any nationality who have spent more than ten days in any of the listed countries, whether in transit or as part of a visit, before entering Ecuador. Airlines have begun sharing this information through their official channels in compliance with the Ministry of Health’s directive.
The requirement follows confirmation of two yellow fever-related deaths in Ecuador. Although Health Minister Edgar Lama initially urged calm after the first case, describing it as isolated, the National Emergency Operations Committee (COE) decided to implement immediate measures on May 2. These actions, coordinated with other government agencies, are part of a declared health emergency in response to rising cases of yellow fever and pertussis, aimed at protecting public health and containing outbreaks in high-risk areas.
To be valid for entry, the yellow fever vaccine must have been administered at least 10 days before travel. Health officials emphasize that the vaccine offers lifetime immunity.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health reminds Ecuadorian citizens and residents who are not previously vaccinated and planning to travel to high-risk areas within the Ecuadorian Amazon—specifically the provinces of Sucumbíos, Orellana, Napo, Pastaza, Morona Santiago, and Zamora Chinchipe—that they must also be vaccinated at least 10 days prior to travel.
All travelers planning to enter Ecuador from the affected countries who meet the stay requirement are advised to ensure they possess a valid and up-to-date yellow fever vaccination certificate.
