EANA completes assembly of the new secondary radar at Ezeiza Airport

The Argentine Air Navigation Company (EANA) has completed the installation of the new antenna and pedestal for the secondary radar system being deployed at Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Ezeiza, as part of a broader initiative to modernize the country’s air traffic management infrastructure.
A secondary radar differs from a primary radar in that it not only detects an aircraft’s position by bouncing signals off it, but also receives additional data transmitted by the aircraft itself—such as identification, altitude, and heading. This requires the aircraft to be equipped with a transponder, which automatically responds to radar signals.
The new system, which EANA says had been delayed for several years, has now been revived by the current administration. According to the agency, the radar will offer greater coverage, improved data accuracy, and an estimated lifespan of over 15 years.
The modernization involves a complete overhaul of the existing radar, including a tower twice as tall as the previous one, a new central electronics unit, next-generation communication systems, upgraded antenna and pedestal, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) infrastructure.
EANA stated that the updated system will support integration with technologies such as ADS-B and Mode S, which will enhance operational safety and improve the efficiency of air traffic control in the Baires Terminal Area (TMA Baires), the busiest airspace region in Argentina.
The agency emphasized that all work is being carried out without disrupting air navigation services, ensuring operational continuity and safety throughout the process.
In the coming days, EANA plans to move forward with electronics configuration, system calibration, and final checks before officially bringing the new radar system online.
