Delta Air Lines customers flying from the U.S. into Mainland China on connecting China Eastern flights at Shanghai – Pudong International Airport now have the option to check their bags at their final destination in China.

In addition, customers traveling from within China to the U.S. via Shanghai can also check their bags with China Eastern at their home cities in China. Passengers will no longer have to pick up and recheck their baggage at Pudong Airport for both inbound and outbound flights, and can pass through immigration control and board their onward flights, optimizing a better connecting experience in Shanghai on both airlines’ services.

The «TransChina» connecting procedure is enabled on all flights to and from 96 Mainland Chinese cities via Pudong Airport operated by China Eastern and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines, including Delta Air Lines codeshare services.

Thanks to the China Eastern partnership, Delta cemented its position as the first foreign airline to provide TransChina in June 2018. This transshipment service was suspended in February 2022 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic health crisis. The Atlanta-based airline reactivated this service on July 17, 2023.

«Thanks to the partnership with China Eastern, we are able to offer a great benefit to our mutual customers flying between the U.S. and China via Pudong Airport. We continue to work together to create a better travel experience for our customers in China and the United States«, said Wong Hong, president of Delta in China.

Delta Air Lines and China Eastern Airlines, both Skyteam members, entered into a strategic partnership in 2015. This alliance allows both airlines to compete more effectively on routes between the U.S. and mainland China, offering more travel options to customers in both nations and making joint investments in the passenger experience. Both airlines currently operate 260 weekly codeshare flights.
