Copa Seeks Authorization to Fly to Aeroparque in Buenos Aires
Copa Airlines Colombia, which operates commercially as Wingo, has submitted a formal request to Colombia's Special Administrative Unit of Civil Aeronautics (Aerocivil) to operate flights to Jorge Newbery Airfield (AEP), the central airport of Buenos Aires.
According to an official document from the Colombian aviation authority dated August 12, 2025, the company is seeking permits for a trunk route that would connect eight Colombian cities with the Argentine capital, with a stopover in Panama.
The request details the operation from Bogotá (BOG), Medellín (MDE), Cali (CLO), Cartagena (CTG), Barranquilla (BAQ), San Andrés (ADZ), Pereira (PEI), or Bucaramanga (BGA), passing through Panama City (PTY) and ending in Buenos Aires (AEP).
The proposed service would have seven weekly frequencies and be operated with Boeing 737-800NG aircraft. A key point of the application is the request for fifth freedom traffic rights. This would allow the airline to board passengers in Panama destined for Buenos Aires and vice versa on flights originating in Colombia.
The potential arrival of Copa Colombia at Jorge Newbery Airfield is a strategic move for the airline. For passengers, landing at AEP significantly reduces ground transportation time and costs. For the airline, operating at AEP would allow it to compete more directly in the corporate and tourism markets that value efficiency and quick access to the city center.
Currently Copa Airlines operates 38 weekly flights to Buenos Aires, which will rise to 42 in the Southern Hemisphere Summer.

The approval of this route would not only expand connectivity between Colombia and Argentina but also strengthen the role of Copa Airlines' Hub of the Americas in Panama as a key passenger distribution center for the southern continent. The final decision by Aerocivil will be crucial in defining the future of this potential new air connection.
