Colombia would negotiate with Embraer the purchase of three KC-390 Millennium
Colombia is close to signing a new defense contract to modernize its Air Force with the KC-390 Millennium, a military transport aircraft developed by Embraer and already in use by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
The move comes amid escalating internal conflict, particularly against FARC dissidents, who have carried out bomb attacks on military and security forces. President Gustavo Petro has emphasized that national security is now a top priority, with a focus on strengthening and modernizing the Armed Forces.
Colombia recently purchased SAAB JAS-39E/F Gripen fighter jets and is now reportedly considering buying three KC-390 units to replace its aging Lockheed C-130H fleet. The information was confirmed by Brazilian Defense Minister José Múcio, who also noted that Colombia is in active talks with Embraer, alongside countries like Mexico, Turkey, India, and Poland.
The KC-390 is the largest aircraft produced in the Southern Hemisphere and is experiencing growing global interest, with nine countries already operating or expecting deliveries.
An official announcement could be made during F-AIR Colombia, the country’s largest aerospace event, scheduled for July.
