Hong Kong’s flagship airline, Cathay Pacific, has launched a tender process with Airbus and Boeing to acquire next-generation wide-body aircraft. The options under consideration include the Airbus A350, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, or an expansion of its current Boeing 777X order.

    Securing Aircraft Amid Production Constraints

According to Bloomberg, the airline has invited both Airbus and Boeing to submit proposals at a time when airlines worldwide are rushing to secure production slots. Both manufacturers are fully booked until 2029, with additional constraints due to supply chain disruptions and part shortages.

This investment aligns with Cathay Pacific’s strategic growth plan, supporting its expansion at Hong Kong International Airport, which now operates with three runways. After overcoming pandemic-related challenges, the airline has achieved a strong recovery, transporting over 100,000 passengers daily and restoring its route network to pre-pandemic levels.

    Expanding Routes and Passenger Experience

As part of its expansion, Cathay Pacific has added new routes to Rome, Munich, Brussels, and Dallas and aims to reach 100 destinations by 2025.

To enhance its competitiveness and passenger experience, the airline has announced a $12.8 billion investment plan over the next seven years, which includes:

Airbus vs. Boeing: A Critical Decision

While Airbus has been favored in recent Cathay Pacific orders, the airline is now carefully assessing the Boeing 787 and 777X alongside the Airbus A350. The final decision will depend on cost, fuel efficiency, sustainability, and operational compatibility with the current fleet.

With increasing competition from Singapore Airlines and other leading carriers, choosing the right aircraft will be crucial for Cathay Pacific’s global expansion strategy. Whether the airline opts for Airbus, Boeing, or a mix of both will shape its future for years to come.
