Argentina Demands Reversal of Venezuelan Airspace Ban Amid Escalating Diplomatic Row
The Argentine Foreign Ministry brought to the attention of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) the controversial action taken by the dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, to ban Argentine flights from passing through Venezuelan airspace.
This measure was in retaliation for the decision by the Argentine president, Javier Milei, to hand over to the justice of the United States a Boeing 747-300 aircraft from Emtrasur, involved with the Iranian regime.
According to Infobae, Argentina and Venezuela will face each other at ICAO, a multilateral organization belonging to the United Nations created in 1944 to ensure compliance with the basic rules of air cooperation established in the Chicago Convention.
In response to the diplomatic escalation promoted by the Venezuelan regime, the Argentine Foreign Ministry demanded that Maduro reverse his illicit position.Gerardo Bompadre, General Consul of the Argentine State, will respond to Venezuela that the delivery of the Emtrasur aircraft was a decision of the Judicial Power, which was complied with by the Casa Rosada.
The consul will explain to the ICAO that Caracas only bans flights from Argentina, a unilateral decision that violates the basic norms of the Chicago Convention. Given these facts, the ICAO should guide Maduro to suspend his decision to ban Aerolíneas Argentinas flights in Venezuelan airspace.
Bilateral relations between Argentina and Venezuela are at a quite critical stage. Milei decided not to appoint an ambassador to Caracas and will use all international forums to denounce Maduro’s regime.
