American Airlines' most anticipated jet has finally landed in the US
The first Airbus A321XLR for American Airlines now has a scheduled date for its commercial debut. The long-range narrow-body aircraft is set to begin operations on December 18, 2025, flying the premium transcontinental route between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX).
The company took delivery of its first A321XLR (N303NY) with this cabin configuration on October 22, arriving directly from the Airbus assembly line in Hamburg, Germany. With this addition, American becomes the first United States airline to operate this aircraft model.
"Designed for long journeys with comfort and style at the forefront, American is thrilled to be the first U.S. airline to operate the A321XLR," said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. "Whether customers are traveling from coast to coast or across the ocean, American’s newest aircraft demonstrates our commitment to providing a premium travel experience."
Interestingly, the aircraft had already been accepted by American Airlines at the end of July, but had to remain in Hamburg for longer due to a delay in the delivery of seats by the supplier.
Initially, the aircraft will operate on transcontinental routes within the U.S. American Airlines confirmed in an official statement that as it receives more deliveries, the A321XLR will expand to international routes during the first half of 2026. Tickets for the inaugural flight (AA Flight 3) and for select dates through February 11, 2026, are now on sale.
A premium narrow-body cabin
American’s A321XLR is the only aircraft from a global operator offering a three-class configuration on this model. The cabin is designed to replace the A321T aircraft that currently serve the most important transcontinental routes.

The business class is equipped with 20 lie-flat Flagship Suite seats, which include privacy doors, more personal storage space, a wireless charging pad, and a cocktail tray.

Meanwhile, the Premium Economy cabin offers 12 seats featuring enhanced winged headrests for increased privacy, as well as leg and footrests and wireless charging.

The Main Cabin will feature 123 seats equipped with entertainment screens and multiple charging options.
Onboard services
Flagship Suite passengers will receive priority check-in, security, boarding, and baggage handling, along with access to the Greenwich Lounge at JFK. Onboard, the service includes multi-course meals, amenity kits, and premium bedding.
Premium Economy customers will receive hot meal entrees, a personal amenity kit, and an Ostrichpillow lumbar pillow, among other enhanced services.
