American Airlines and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have launched a pilot program this week aimed at streamlining baggage inspection for international passengers arriving in the United States. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with Sydney Airport (SYD), applies to the airline’s daily flights to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The program, called International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS), is designed to eliminate the need for passengers to claim and recheck their luggage upon arrival in the U.S. when they have connecting domestic flights. According to the airline, travelers will be able to proceed directly to TSA security screening after clearing CBP immigration, without stopping at customs to retrieve their bags.

American Airlines says the new system is aimed at reducing connection times and improving the international travel experience, all without compromising existing security protocols. The company notes that the process uses advanced technology to inspect baggage remotely, instead of through traditional customs inspection points.

Gary Tomasulo, Vice President of Global Corporate Security at American Airlines, stated, “We’re excited to collaborate with CBP on this innovative initiative. By leveraging advanced technology and working closely with Sydney Airport and our partners BagCheck and Brock Solutions, we are enhancing security and streamlining baggage inspections to make international travel easier for our customers.”

From CBP, Diane J. Sabatino, Acting Executive Assistant Commissioner of Field Operations, said, “As part of our efforts to innovate air travel, CBP is using technology to improve baggage inspections, enhance security, and facilitate traveler movement. The International Remote Baggage Screening initiative is a significant step in modernizing our processes.”

This initiative is part of CBP’s Airport Modernization Plan, which aims to implement technological improvements at Federal Inspection Stations (FIS) in U.S. airports to bolster security and improve the processing of both domestic and international travelers.

Graham White, Head of Security at Sydney Airport, added, “We’re proud to support American Airlines and CBP in this initiative, which marks a significant and positive change in the passenger experience at U.S. ports of entry. Our priorities are safety, efficiency, and service, and this partnership advances all three.”

Both American Airlines and CBP anticipate expanding the pilot program to additional international airports in the near future.
