Aerolíneas Argentinas Revives Fifth Freedom Flights After More Than a Decade with New Uruguay Routes
Aerolíneas Argentinas will operate two routes from Brazil to Punta del Este during the upcoming summer season, making use of the fifth freedom of the air, a resource the company has not used since 2012. Starting in late December, the company will offer direct flights from São Paulo and Porto Alegre to the Uruguayan beach resort.
This operation allows the airline to sell tickets between two destinations outside of Argentina. The last time Aerolíneas Argentinas utilized this model was on its route connecting Buenos Aires with Auckland and Sydney.
Additionally, the company will enhance its traditional connectivity with Uruguay from Argentina. The offering from Buenos Aires will grow to 28 weekly frequencies to Punta del Este (five more than last season) and 16 weekly flights to Montevideo (two more than the previous summer). The schedule is completed with two weekly flights between Córdoba and Punta del Este.
"This initiative reinforces the idea that our company must seek maximum profitability across our entire network, taking advantage of the opportunities that arise during the summer season," stated Fabián Lombardo, president of Aerolíneas Argentinas.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a fifth freedom flight? It is an air right that allows an airline to operate commercial flights between two countries that are not its home country, as part of a service that originates or terminates in its own country. In this case, Aerolíneas Argentinas can sell tickets exclusively between Brazil and Uruguay.
When will the new routes from Brazil operate? The São Paulo – Punta del Este flight will begin on December 25th, and the Porto Alegre – Punta del Este flight will start on December 26th. Both routes will operate with two weekly frequencies until January 31st.
Are these routes permanent? No, this is a seasonal operation designed to cover demand during the summer season, specifically between late December and late January.
How many flights will Aerolíneas Argentinas add from Argentina to Uruguay? The company will add a total of seven weekly frequencies from Buenos Aires: five to Punta del Este and two to Montevideo, in addition to maintaining the two weekly flights from Córdoba to Punta del Este.
