Abra Group Confirms Order for 50 Additional A320neo Jets, Adds A330neo Agreements
Grupo Abra, the holding company that controls Avianca and GOL Linhas Aéreas, announced adjustments to its fleet plan. According to a company statement, it has exercised purchase options for 50 Airbus A320neo aircraft and signed agreements to incorporate up to seven Airbus A330neo jets.
These actions aim to secure aircraft availability for the expansion and renewal plans of the group's airlines. Abra's total order book is one of the most extensive in Latin America.
Long-haul fleet
For medium and long-haul operations, the group signed agreements for up to seven Airbus A330neo.
Legally, the agreement for the A330neo was signed by GOL with the lessor Avolon Aerospace.
However, Abra emphasized that the allocation of these aircraft to the group's airlines will depend on the market's operational and financial conditions at the time of their incorporation.
This agreement is in addition to the order placed in 2024 for five A350-900s that will be integrated into the fleet in the coming years.
While Wamos Air could be the natural choice for these aircraft, it should not be ruled out that Abra is paving the way for a potential withdrawal by Azul from the Brazilian long-haul market.
Narrow-body fleet
In the single-aisle segment, Grupo Abra exercised 50 purchase options for the Airbus A320neo, adding to the 88 previously committed aircraft. With this decision, the total number of A320neos pending delivery rises to 138 units through 2032. The portfolio is complemented by an existing order for 96 Boeing 737 MAX jets, to be received by 2030. In total, Abra has access to a portfolio of 234 narrow-body aircraft for the upcoming years.
Avianca will be the first airline in the group to receive an A320neo from this new order by the end of 2025. This aircraft will be configured with the Airbus Airspace cabin, which includes larger XL overhead bins offering up to 60% more space, and adaptive LED lighting. The configuration also includes three rows of Premium seats in a 2-2 layout, developed by Recaro for Avianca.
Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of Abra, stated that "this announcement confirms that we continue to make the necessary investments aligned with our commitment to providing ever-increasing access to air travel for millions of people". He added that the incremental A320neo order "secures the replacement and growth needs of our current narrow-body fleet".
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, commented that the choice of these models "further strengthens our strategic cooperation".
Grupo Abra controls the Avianca and GOL brands, holds a strategic investment in Wamos Air, and hasconvertible debt representing a minority stake investment in Sky Airline . The group's combined fleet exceeds 300 aircraft.
