At 9:00 am on February 11, 2023, Xiamen Airlines’ first A321neo began its company life operating flight MF8127 between the cities of Xiamen and Beijing. The aircraft, delivered to the airline in December and registered B-32CU, took off from Gaoqi International Airport with 100% occupancy.

On the day of the flight, Xiamen Airlines conducted various activities in the terminal and on the apron. In the terminal, passengers checked in at themed counters. They also witnessed a dance performed by the airline’s cabin crew, shared a celebratory cake, and received souvenirs. During the flight, they enjoyed special meals and a traditional tea ceremony.

Zhao Dong, president of Xiamen Airlines, said that the desire to incorporate aircraft from the European manufacturer dates back to four years ago when he was invited to Airbus headquarters. In September last year, Xiamen Airlines and Airbus signed a contract for the purchase of A320 family aircraft. This was aimed at gradually promoting structural adjustment and fleet optimization, as well as providing a greater capacity guarantee for its future.

The maiden flight of the Airbus A321neo aircraft also marks a solid step taken by Xiamen Airlines in the dual-branded fleet operation model. Dong noted in this regard that «a large airline should always operate with brands and models of aircraft. In the future, Xiamen Airlines will introduce more new models.»

Xiamen Airlines’ A321neo adopts Airbus’ flexible cabin, providing passengers with a wide-body aircraft-like experience. The cabin has 208 seats (8 in business class and 200 in economy class), all ergonomic and locally manufactured. In addition, luggage space and capacity have been increased by 40% and 60% respectively.

The CFM International LEAP-1A engines that power the A321neo reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and noise by 50%. The aircraft is also equipped with an in-flight home entertainment system. This makes it possible to enjoy audiovisual content more in line with the market. In addition, galleys, lavatories, and other equipment have been redesigned on the A321neo to meet the needs of more passengers.
