What does Aena say about the bites in Terminal 4 of Madrid Airport?
The presence of insects in Terminal T4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport has been the subject of media reports and social media posts, which claimed a bedbug infestation in the area. In response, Aena stated that no infestation has been detected, based on reports from a professional pest control company.
According to the airport operator, cleaning and sanitation tasks are ongoing and are reinforced whenever requested by employees or passengers. The company maintains three separate cleaning contracts, one for each terminal area, with a specific contract assigned to T4.
Aena explained that the awarded contractors are held to high quality standards, which are reviewed periodically. If any insects are detected, a response protocol is activated, including identification of the species and targeted eradication treatments, which are also applied preventively.
Regarding reports of bites from some airport staff, the company said that no infestation was confirmed through the conducted analyses. However, inspections, monitoring treatments, and localized interventions were carried out in areas where insects were found.
The company also indicated it has worked in coordination with involved contractors to implement all necessary measures, ensuring that the safety and well-being of workers and passengers remain a priority.
As for claims linking the bites to the presence of homeless individuals at the airport, Aena stated that this connection cannot be confirmed. It added that relevant public institutions are aware of the situation and have formed working groups in collaboration with Aena to address the issue.
