VIVA counters Avianca and announces a brand new route to Mexico

Competition for the market between Colombia and Mexico keeps every airline in both countries constantly on edge, constantly announcing new links and frequencies.

On the same date that Avianca announced its flights to Mexico City from Cali (CLO) and Medellin (MDE), VIVA advances in its international expansion strategy with the new direct route Cartagena – Mexico City, which is added to the other three direct routes connecting Medellin, Bogota, and Cali to the Mexican capital. It also has a connection from Medellin and Bogota to Cancun (CUN).

Cartagena is now the fourth city in Colombia with the highest number of passengers to Mexico City. The former Interjet operated the route with up to four weekly Airbus A320 flights between November 2019 and March 2020, carrying close to 20,000 passengers during that period.

VIVA will begin operations on May 3 and will allow tourists from both countries to make the most of their travel days by arriving in the morning and departing on night flights, with three weekly frequencies on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

This will be the company’s tenth international route, in addition to the five connections to Mexico, it also has direct connections from Lima (LIM), Peru, to Bogota (BOG) and Medellin (MDE); Orlando (MCO), and Miami (MIA), United States, to Medellin (MDE). As of March 18, flights between Medellín and Punta Cana (PUJ), Dominican Republic, will commence.
