    Durazno International Airport, Santa Bernardina, has been officially inaugurated following an investment of over $12 million in infrastructure, technology, and equipment. The project is part of Uruguay’s National System of International Airports modernization plan, led by Aeropuertos Uruguay, a subsidiary of Corporación América Airports.

    A Major Step for Connectivity in Uruguay

    The inauguration ceremony was attended by Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou, who emphasized the importance of the project and its impact on national connectivity:

    "Today, we bring a vision to life by establishing this airport in a key aviation hub for our country," the president stated.

    Infrastructure Upgrades and Enhanced Security

    According to Aeropuertos Uruguay, the airport's renovation included:

    • New passenger terminal
    • Perimeter road and fencing
    • New taxiway and aircraft apron
    • Expanded parking facilities
    • Upgraded fire station
    • Renovation of the National Air Police Unit

    Diego Arrosa, CEO of Corporación América Airports Uruguay, described the inauguration as a milestone in the country’s airport modernization strategy:

    "With the launch of Durazno International Airport, we complete the consolidation of the National Airport System—six new, modern, world-class airports enhancing Uruguay’s connectivity and safety."

    Authorities Highlight Economic and Strategic Impact

    The ceremony also featured Durazno’s Mayor, Carmelo Vidalín, and Minister of Defense, Armando Castaingdebat, who underscored the economic and strategic benefits of the modernization project.

    "For years, we have dreamed of turning this into reality," said Mayor Vidalín.

    "This is not just important for Durazno—it is a strategic asset for the entire country," added Minister Castaingdebat.

    Technological Innovations in Air Operations

    The airport’s modernization is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade across Uruguay.

    Recent Improvements Include:

    • 2023: Installation of a Category I ILS system on Runway 21 North
    • New state-of-the-art radar to expand national airspace coverage
    • Upgraded communications equipment in the control tower to enhance operational efficiency

    The opening of Durazno International Airport is a key milestone in Uruguay’s ongoing airport modernization program, which has already seen the renovation of airports in Carmelo, Rivera, Salto, Melo, and Paysandú.
