United Airlines Announces First-Ever Nonstop Service to Santiago de Compostela, Spain
For the first time in its history, Santiago de Compostela will have a regular, nonstop air connection with the United States. United Airlines announced today that starting May 22, 2026, it will begin operating a new seasonal route between its Newark (EWR) hub and the capital of Galicia, in northwestern Spain.
The flights will operate three times a week using Boeing 737-MAX 8 aircraft. This will mark the first time a scheduled service directly connects the U.S. market with Santiago de Compostela, a destination of great cultural, religious, and touristic importance, globally known as the final point of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
The introduction of this route will facilitate access to the Galicia region for business and leisure travelers, eliminating the need for connections at other European airports. Until now, passengers flying from the United States had to make stops in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, or Lisbon to reach this destination.
This new connection is part of a major expansion of United's transatlantic network for the Summer 2026 season. According to a statement from United Airlines, the carrier will also launch flights from Newark to three other new European destinations: Split in Croatia, Bari in Italy, and Glasgow in Scotland, solidifying its position as the U.S. airline with the most destinations across the Atlantic.
With the addition of Santiago de Compostela, United Airlines will serve a total of six destinations in Spain. The airline already operates flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, and Bilbao, and is the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop services to the latter three from the United States.
Tickets for this new route and the other summer destinations are now on sale through United's website and mobile app. As is standard for new international routes, all flights are subject to government approval.
