Terminal 2 of Milan Malpensa Airport reopens after three-year closure

The Terminal 2 of Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP) officially reopened its doors to passengers and resumed operations today, Wednesday May 31, after being closed for three years.

Milan Malpensa Airport’s Terminal 2 reopens

The facility, exclusively dedicated to the operations of the British low-cost carrier easyJet, closed in June 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic on air travel. Its reopening took considerably longer than that of other European airports.

However, during this time, modernization works were carried out in the terminal. SEA Milan Airports, the company managing Milan Malpensa, highlighted the new «refreshed look that will further enhance the passenger travel experience, from check-in and security checks to boarding.»

Lorenzo Lagorio, easyJet’s Country Manager in Italy, celebrated the reopening of the company’s «main base on continental Europe».

Improved facilities

The baggage check-in area now features 21 self-service stations, while the security control area has been completely restructured. With the aim of enhancing functionality and reducing passenger wait times, the new layout includes nine automated lines.

In addition, a new explosive detection machine has been installed to analyze carry-on luggage. The airport management company highlighted that, unlike in regular procedures, this technology will allow the security checks to be performed without the need to separate electronic devices and other items from the rest of the baggage.

Furthermore, Terminal 2 now has an enhanced commercial offering: the building includes a 1.500-square-meter duty-free shop and new dining spaces.

SEA Milan Airports also emphasized that the renovated facilities are now more energy-efficient, thanks to the installation of movable walkways, escalators, and elevators that consume less electricity. Thermal insulation has also been improved in certain areas, and a new air conditioning system has been installed, which will reduce energy consumption by up to 15% compared to the previous infrastructure.

«The reopening of Malpensa’s Terminal 2 is further confirmation that we have recovered passenger traffic and that the pandemic has definitively ended», stated Armando Brunini, CEO of SEA Milan Airports. «We celebrate this day together with easyJet, which finally returns to its terminal, now more comfortable, efficient, and also more sustainable, thanks to the investments we have made to improve the experience and travel quality for all passengers», he added.
