Spain and Airbus Sign National Helicopter Plan to Modernize Military and State Capabilities
At the most recent edition of the International Defense and Security Exhibition (FEINDEF), Spain’s Ministry of Defense and Airbus Helicopters formalized the signing of the National Helicopter Plan. This agreement forms part of the Spanish Government’s National Industrial and Technological Security and Defense Plan, outlining the modernization and expansion of the rotary-wing capabilities of the Armed Forces and other state entities.
The Secretary of State for Defense, along with Airbus executives and senior ministry officials, signed the document, which includes plans for future acquisitions of various aircraft. Among these, the incorporation of additional H135 helicopters is expected for the Army Airmobile Forces (FAMET) and the Spanish Air and Space Force. The fleet of NH90 helicopters will also be expanded across all three branches of the military.
A central component of the agreement is the renewal of the Air and Space Force’s transport and logistical fleet. In particular, it calls for the replacement of the AS332M and AS532UL Super Puma helicopters currently operated by the 402 Squadron for missions including VIP transport. These will be substituted with “several super-medium utility helicopters.”
In addition, and according to information revealed during a presentation on Flexrotor UAV operations with a naval H135, the Spanish Navy is set to receive the H145 model. The plan also includes the acquisition of “new multi-role light twin-engine helicopters,” although specific models have not yet been disclosed.
Airbus Helicopters stated that “The agreement also provides for the modernization of the helicopter fleets of the Ministry of the Interior and other agencies involved in national security operations.” This extension of the plan underscores a broader effort to standardize and enhance the aerial resources used by various Spanish state agencies in critical missions.
The signing at FEINDEF cements the collaboration between the Spanish government and the European manufacturer, aiming to ensure modern operational capabilities while strengthening Spain’s industrial and technological base in the defense and security sector. The aerospace industry is watching closely, as this initiative not only involves equipment renewal but also long-term support for the domestic supply and maintenance chain. The specific characteristics of the “super-medium” and “multi-role light twin-engine” helicopter models are expected to be detailed in future phases of the plan.
