The tender for the expansion of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport will take place in the last quarter of 2024. Once the ALC process is completed, the Valencia Airport expansion will follow suit.

The announcement was made during a meeting of senior Aena executives, attended by Aena’s President and CEO, Maurici Lucena, Vice President, Javier Marín, and Director General of Airports, Elena Mayoral, among others.

The meeting is part of the usual institutional meetings in preparation for Aena’s investment proposal for all airports in its network in Spain. Representing the Generalitat Valenciana were the Minister of Environment, Water, Infrastructure, and Territory, Salomé Pradas, and the Minister of Innovation, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, Nuria Montes de Diego.

The Aena delegation explained to the ministers how the airport infrastructure planning process works, based on traffic forecasts developed with technical criteria and forecasts from international organizations.

As a result of this process, it has been concluded that the priority for investments should be the expansion of the airport terminals at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández and Valencia.

These expansion works will increase the capacity of the two airports to meet future demand. Therefore, sustainable growth in airport, economic, and environmental terms of both infrastructures will continue to contribute to the economy and development of the regions they serve.

Air Cargo: AENA launched a plan to boost the sector in Spain

The investments associated with terminal expansion will be discussed by proposal of Aena in the mandatory consultation process with airlines, in a procedure regulated by a 2014 law involving the National Commission of Markets and Competition and the regulator. They will then be reflected in Aena’s investment plan, the Airport Regulation Document (DORA).

DORA is the instrument that every five years outlines the investments needed by airports if traffic forecasts are met.

The proposals presented in the institutional meeting were already discussed in the Airport Coordination Committee of the region, held on April 9, attended by representatives of the government of the Generalitat Valenciana and regional business associations.
