SAM VOLCEX 24/01: South America Prepares for Volcanic Ash Emergencies
Between December 2 and 6, the SAM VOLCEX 24/01 exercise will take place, a volcanic eruption simulation organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with the participation of the Empresa Argentina de Navegación Aérea (EANA) and the supervision of the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC).
This exercise, which will bring together the 14 States of ICAO’s South American Region (SAM), aims primarily to evaluate and improve the aviation sector’s response actions to the threat of volcanic ash. The simulation seeks to optimize procedures to mitigate the impacts on air operations, such as flight cancellations or diversions caused by volcanic activity.
The exercise will feature coordination by Argentina’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) and supervision by ANAC, which will consolidate the information generated during the activity, its results, and applicable conclusions for the country. It is important to note that the SAM VOLCEX 24/01 will not affect the normal course of air operations, as the simulation will be conducted within a controlled framework.
The simulation will involve various entities from the aviation sector, including airlines, volcanic ash advisory centers, meteorological offices, volcano observatories, and air navigation service providers. Airport operators and international organizations impacting the South American Region will also participate.
The main objective of this exercise is to improve contingency plans and strengthen the dissemination of notifications regarding volcanic eruption events. Additionally, it aims to assess the response capacity of air transport and Air Navigation Services to ash contamination.
During the exercise, all communications related to the activity will use the terms «EXERCISE» or «EXER» to distinguish the simulation from real operations.
