The size of the free carry-on bag that Ryanair passengers can bring on board is larger as of this Thursday, September 4. The airline has completed the implementation of new baggage sizers across the 235 European airports where it operates to reflect the change.

The new permitted dimensions for the no-cost personal item are 40 x 30 x 20 cm. According to the company, this size represents a 33% larger volume than the reference standard used by other airlines in Europe for a free personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm).

This item is the only piece of luggage that each passenger can bring into the cabin for free under the standard fare, with the main condition that it must fit under the seat in front of them. The airline reported that all its baggage sizers at the boarding gates have already been adapted to the new dimensions.

This modification applies to the company's basic policy. Passengers who wish to carry a second, larger piece of carry-on luggage, such as a cabin trolley, must still purchase the Priority Boarding service.

Dara Brady, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Ryanair, commented on the implementation stating that "From today, our new, bigger free carry-on bag is now 33% larger than the EU standard. Our baggage sizers at all airports have now been resized to accommodate this bigger, free carry-on bag."

The executive also highlighted the available alternatives and the consequences of not complying with the regulations. "All passengers wishing to bring a second carry bag can do so by availing of our Priority Boarding service, and passengers can also purchase check-in bags, should they so wish, during their booking process," he noted.

Finally, Brady warned: "We hope our customers will enjoy these bigger, free carry-on bag sizes, but any passenger who fails to comply with these new generous limits, will be required to pay the checked in bag fee at the boarding gate."
