Portuguese Air Force to Receive NATO-Standard A-29N Super Tucano Aircraft in 2025
The A-29N is the NATO version of the Super Tucano, featuring advanced avionics, enhanced self-defense systems, and extended range.
The Portuguese Air Force (FAP) will take delivery this year of its first units of the A-29N Super Tucano, a new advanced trainer and light attack variant of Embraer’s A-29, adapted to meet NATO standards. The contract, signed in December 2024, includes the purchase of 12 aircraft, a flight simulator, and a comprehensive logistical support package.
With this acquisition, Portugal becomes the launch customer for the A-29N, taking a significant step in modernizing its fixed-wing fleet for training and close air support (CAS) missions in low-threat environments, particularly in combined operations across Africa.
Production Underway, Deliveries to Begin in 2025
According to Janes, the first aircraft are expected to be delivered this year. Production is currently underway, confirmed Walter Pinto Junior, Chief Operating Officer of Embraer Defense & Security. While the exact number of units currently in production remains undisclosed due to confidentiality agreements, the full fleet is expected to be delivered over the next two to three years.
The deal, valued at around €200 million (approx. $226.9 million), includes not only the aircraft but also the infrastructure necessary for operation and maintenance, thereby boosting the FAP’s capabilities in training, patrol, and tactical support missions.
A-29N: European-Specific Enhancements
The A-29N Super Tucano features several key upgrades over previous variants, including:
- NATO-compliant communication and navigation systems, such as V/UHF radios, SATCOM terminal, DACAS module for digitized close air support, and Link 16 data link.
- Integration with ROVER systems for real-time video transmission to ground forces.
- Enhanced self-defense suite.
- Next-generation electro-optical surveillance system.
- Increased range and endurance, allowing for broader mission profiles.
- Internal armament includes two M3P 12.7×99 mm machine guns, with compatibility for precision-guided munitions and rocket pods.
These features position the A-29N not only as an advanced training platform, but also as a versatile tool for armed ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance), border patrol, and tactical air protection in international deployments.
A Strategic and Cost-Efficient Choice
The selection of the A-29N reinforces the FAP’s strategy to operate rugged, low-cost aircraft capable of functioning in austere conditions and from unprepared airstrips. It also lays the groundwork for future industrial cooperation between Embraer and Portugal’s defense sector, according to Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, during the contract announcement.

With over 260 units sold and more than 570,000 flight hours logged, the A-29 Super Tucano stands as the most successful aircraft in its class worldwide. The new NATO-compliant version aims to extend this success into the European market, where air forces increasingly seek lightweight, versatile, and cost-effective solutions.
