Polish Customs Seize Aircraft Tires Bound for Russia in Sanctions Evasion Attempt
In an operation that sheds light on new tactics to bypass European Union sanctions, Polish customs authorities seized five tons of Boeing aircraft tires that were ultimately bound for Russia, despite strict restrictions on such products under EU regulations.
The report was released by TVP, Poland's state television network, which detailed that the cargo was intercepted during a routine inspection in Koroszczyn, a border village near Belarus. While documentation described the shipment as truck and bus tires, a closer inspection revealed the goods were aerospace components.
According to Poland’s National Revenue Administration (KAS), the shipment originated from a company based in Spain, with a listed recipient in Azerbaijan. The route was set to pass through Belarus and Russia—both countries under enhanced Western sanctions since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“The sanctioned goods were detained and criminal customs fraud proceedings have been initiated,” authorities said in a statement cited by TVP.
The case reveals an increasingly common strategy: disguising sensitive materials with misleading labels and using indirect transit routes to evade restrictions. In this incident, the tires traveled across Europe from Spain toward the East, in an apparent attempt to conceal their final destination at the core of Russia’s aviation system.
