MBDA UK closes a deal with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. (PGZ) for the supply of NAREW missiles and launchers and the transfer of technology and know-how for their production in Poland.

NAREW will provide Poland with a highly advanced mobile air defense system capable of dealing with modern and future threats with a range exceeding 40 km, using the CAMM-ER missile developed in cooperation between the UK and Italy. The Polish Armaments Agency awarded the PGZ-NAREW consortium the executive contracts for NAREW in September.

Following the signing of the agreement, valued at more than £4 billion (almost USD 5 billion) and including a large package of technology and know-how transfer from MBDA to PGZ, the PGZ-NAREW Consortium will be able to locally manufacture more than 1,000 CAMM-ER air defense missiles and more than 100 iLaunchers for the NAREW program in Poland.

The NAREW program consists of development and delivery of components and subsystems for construction of twenty-three short-range anti-aircraft missile batteries. This system will implement the medium-altitude air defense of the Polish multilayer system, complementing the WISŁA program, which comprises the acquisition of 12 batteries of anti-aircraft and anti-missile Patriot missiles for high-altitude defense, and the PILICA+ program, also consisting of CAMM missiles (but of 25km range), as well as MANPADS type missiles or barrel weapons, which will be in charge of the lower level air defense.

The primary task of the NAREW system will be to provide cover for troops and installations in the area of operations and air bases, as well as to complement and provide protection for the Patriot batteries of the WISŁA system. The NAREW array will be designed primarily to combat piloted air attack vehicles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles at low altitude.

It is also worth recalling that PGZ and MBDA UK signed a letter of intent to jointly develop a version of the CAMM with up to 100kms range, designated CAMM-MR, for both land and naval air defense.
