Regional airline Maya Island Air, based at Belize City Municipal Airport (TZA), confirmed its new partnership with MONTE, a company dedicated to supporting aviation industry transition initiatives towards net zero carbon emissions through financing and leasing solutions.

Under the agreement, the operator will explore the possibilities of converting aircraft in its fleet to zero-emission propulsion technologies. In doing so, the Belizean company became the latest carrier to partner with MONTE, which will support the technical and financial aspects of the process.

Currently, Maya Island Air operates a fleet of fourteen Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft and offers both scheduled passenger flights and charter services.

«We believe their route network is well suited to the adoption of zero emission propulsion technologies and are excited to work with them on this journey», MONTE said in a statement. The company’s business is particularly focused on operators of this type, offering short-haul air connections with a fleet of turboprops.

To achieve this, it is working on the modernisation of existing turboprop aircraft, starting with the conversion to electric or hybrid propulsion systems, and on the acquisition and financing of new zero-emission aircraft as their development, manufacturing and certification is completed.

This is not the company’s first partnership with an airline in the region: last June, it signed an agreement with Costa Rica Green Airways to advance the conversion of the company’s fleet.
