ITA Airways and Delta Airlines have filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) to operate codeshares across the two airlines’ international networks.

ITA Airways is the successor to the former Alitalia, which was previously a partner of Delta and belonged to the U.S. carrier’s transatlantic joint venture with Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic, which included a codeshare agreement with the designation of both airlines (DL and AZ).

The brand new Italian airline inherited the previous IATA designation code of Alitalia (AZ), which started operations on October 15 and since November 4 began flying to New York (JFK) and expects to add Miami (MIA), Washington (IAD), Boston (BOS) and Los Angeles (LAX) during the summer of 2022. ITA recently joined the Skyteam alliance with an initial one-year membership agreement.

ITA Airways intends to have code-share on Delta flights to Cancun (CUN), Mexico City (MEX), and Monterrey (MTY). It should be noted that Alitalia previously operated in Mexico. On the other hand, Delta plans to place its «DL» code on ITA flights to Cairo, Egypt (CAI) and Tunisia, Tunisia (TUN). Both airlines are still awaiting the DoT’s response.
