GreenSinnergy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French company Axens to collaborate on the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) projects across Argentina and Latin America, amid rising global demand for low-carbon energy solutions in aviation.

The partnership aims to combine GreenSinnergy’s project development expertise with Axens’ advanced technological solutions, including CO₂ capture, hydrogen purification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and refining processes to produce sustainable kerosene and gasoline.

The initial focus will be on Eco-Refinerías del Sur, an industrial project located in Chubut, Argentina, which the company considers one of the region’s most significant SAF initiatives.

The agreement also includes identifying strategic partners, securing regulatory approvals and permits, negotiating feedstock supply and SAF offtake agreements, and developing detailed capital and operational cost estimates.

“We are providing GreenSinnergy with a complete suite of technologies—from CO₂ capture to SAF production—to eliminate technological risk,” said Frédéric Balligand, Vice President of Renewables at Axens. “We will share our global experience from energy transition projects around the world.”

Carlos Villalba, co-founder of GreenSinnergy, added: “This strategic alliance with Axens is a game-changer in our mission to transform Patagonian wind into a new generation of sustainable aviation fuel.” Villalba is Argentine and a graduate of the National University of La Plata, currently residing in Germany since 2018.

GreenSinnergy’s website lists Dr. Juan Zagorodny as the company’s representative in Argentina, bringing over 25 years of experience in the energy sector.

While there have been many SAF-related announcements in Argentina in recent years, actual investments remain scarce, reflecting a broader regional trend. Globally, SAF production is increasing but still falls short of meeting demand. According to IATA, global SAF output is expected to reach 2 million tonnes in 2025, double the 1 million tonnes produced in 2024—but still only 0.7% of the total fuel consumption projected for the airline industry this year.

At the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting in Delhi, Dr. Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior VP of Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasized: “The problem is not the airline industry. The problem is the energy supply,” calling for government policies to boost all forms of renewable energy, including SAF.

She urged policymakers to redirect part of the $1 trillion in annual global fossil fuel subsidies toward renewable energy producers, warning that without policy and investment shifts, aviation will fail to meet its 2050 net-zero emissions target. “It’s not impossible. But at the current pace—with today’s policies and investment levels—it’s a definitive no,” Owens Thomsen stated.
