    Etihad and Ethiopian unveil joint venture to facilitate flights between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia

    Etihad Airways and Ethiopian Airlines have formalized a strategic partnership through a joint venture agreement aimed at enhancing connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Signed at Ethiopian Airlines' headquarters in Addis Ababa, the agreement also includes a codeshare arrangement, providing more travel options for passengers across both airlines' networks.

    As part of the collaboration, Ethiopian Airlines will begin flights from Addis Ababa to Abu Dhabi on July 15, 2025, while Etihad Airways will start its daily flights to Addis Ababa on October 1, 2025. According to the agreement, these new routes will strengthen the ties between the two regions, enhancing connectivity between key destinations in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

    Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, stated that "This joint venture is great news for customers of both airlines. The start of flights between the two great cities of Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi connects our expanding networks, giving our customers seamless access to a growing list of destinations via our extensive hubs." Neves also added that the partnership will open doors for further cooperation in areas such as frequent flyer programs, training, and cargo operations.

    “We are delighted to enter into this strategic agreement with Etihad Airways. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia,” said Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.  Tasew also highlighted that the new flight to Abu Dhabi marks Ethiopian Airlines' third route in the UAE, following Dubai and Sharjah (cargo).

    Ethiopian Airlines will operate the new route using its Boeing 777 and Airbus A350-1000.The airline also provides extensive connectivity from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, facilitating smooth transit options for those connecting to other international and domestic destinations.

    This partnership aims to offer more travel options for passengers traveling between key African destinations on Ethiopian’s network, such as Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kinshasa, and Lusaka, and key cities in the UAE and Asia. Etihad’s routes to Pakistan and Southeast Asia, including destinations like Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Islamabad (Pakistan), will also benefit from the collaboration.
