Embraer and Netherlands Introduce Next-Gen MEDEVAC Module for C-390 Millennium
The new medical evacuation system transforms the aircraft into a mobile ICU for combat, disaster response, or health emergencies.
A new fully compatible MEDEVAC module for the C-390 Millennium transforms the aircraft into a mobile intensive care unit capable of operating in combat zones, during natural disasters, or public health emergencies. This advanced system will also be made available to allied nations.
During the Paris Air Show, Embraer and the Government of the Netherlands signed a landmark agreement setting a new standard for military and humanitarian aeromedical capabilities. The deal includes the supply of a comprehensive MEDEVAC system for the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) C-390 fleet, with an initial purchase and options for seven additional units.
Developed by Embraer Defense & Security, the system features an autonomous roll-on/roll-off module that functions as a fully equipped airborne medical unit. Designed for critical care patients, it includes advanced life support and biocontainment measures to safely treat infectious disease cases—without compromising crew or medical personnel safety.
A key strength of the system is its modular, flexible design. It integrates seamlessly into the C-390’s Cargo Handling System (CHS) via the rear ramp, enabling quick aircraft reconfiguration without structural modifications. In minutes, the C-390 can shift from tactical transport to aeromedical operations, ready to respond to emergencies anywhere in the world.

“This capability will transform our operations, giving the C-390 fleet unprecedented versatility,” said Vice Admiral Jan Willem Hartman, Commander of the RNLAF’s Materiel and IT Command. “It not only boosts our readiness for medical emergencies and disasters but also strengthens our support in international missions with allies.”
“The addition of this aeromedical system showcases the ongoing evolution of the C-390 into a next-gen, multi-mission platform,” added Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “We are honored to support the Netherlands in this qualitative leap and offer a mission-ready solution that will undoubtedly save lives for decades to come.”

Since entering service, the C-390 Millennium has been adopted by the air forces of Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, and soon the Netherlands. Known for its high operational availability (93% mission readiness rate, over 99% completion rate), the aircraft stands out in its class with the ability to carry up to 26 tonnes, cruise at 470 knots (870 km/h), and operate from short, unprepared, or remote runways.

The aircraft can also be configured as an aerial refueler (KC-390), with proven capability to refuel other aircraft both as a tanker and as a receiver. This further enhances its role as a strategic platform for logistics, medical support, and combat operations within multinational coalitions.
With this acquisition, the Netherlands not only boosts its operational capacity, but also emerges as a key player in integrating modular defense and humanitarian solutions. The MEDEVAC system will also be offered to other C-390 operators, promoting interoperability and cooperation in multinational environments.
