Dubai Airports confirmed that it will close Dubai International’s (DXB) northern runway for 45 days, between May 9 and June 22, 2022, to carry out a complete renovation to ensure the continued safety of operations.

While the concessionaire regularly performs runway maintenance work, more extensive upgrades, such as the planned one, require the complete closure of the runway.

Since opening in 1960, the airport’s northern runway was first overhauled in 2014, while the southern runway underwent similar upgrades in 2019.

«Dubai Airports continues to invest in developing and maintaining its world-class infrastructure to enhance the quality and capacity of customer service and maintain its position as the world’s busiest international airport,» the concessionaire said via a statement.

As DXB’s operations are scheduled to run on two runways, several flights will be redirected to Dubai World Central (DWC), Dubai’s second airport, to limit the impact on service during the closure period.

According to the concessionaire, they have notified all airlines in advance to plan for flight reductions and rescheduling.

They have also advised passengers who must travel to or from Dubai during the closure period to check with their respective airlines for the arrival/departure airport and/or terminal prior to their travels.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, the airlines that have scheduled their flights at Dubai World Central during the period DXB would be closed are Aeroflot, Ethiopian Airlines, Gulf Air, IndiGo, Luxair, Pobeda, Smartwings and Ural Airlines.

Flydubai, on the other hand, announced that it will operate to thirty-four destinations from DWC out of the ninety in its current network during the period of the runway renovation project. Most of these are destinations in India, the Middle East and Africa.
