Delta has no plans to invest in ITA Airways

As reported by Reuters, Delta Airlines has informed that it has no plans to invest in Alitalia’s successor, ITA Airways.

The new Italian flag carrier has been looking for a potential partner to expand its business in the future for some months and has started negotiations with some of the major European and foreign airlines.

ITA Airways has been in discussions with IAG and Lufthansa Group, the latter being the most interesting for the Italian company due to the company’s excellent track record of bringing airlines out of the red such as Austrian, Swiss, and Brussels.

Last year, Delta launched a codeshare agreement with ITA Airways, where both airlines have expanded their offerings to destinations in North America and from the Mediterranean. For the summer season, the U.S. airline will offer about 10 daily flights to Italy, its largest offering in that country’s history.

Delta’s CEO in an interview with Reuters said «We have no plans to invest in them».

In 2021 ITA Airways reported its entry into the Skyteam airline alliance, initially for 12 months, in addition to announcing several code-shares and interlining with former Alitalia partners.

Although Alitalia’s successor is feeding its international network with former partners, by the end of this year or early 2023, the company could make a 180⁰ turn, if the integration with any airline and work hand in hand with new airlines arises.
